My research into biodegradable condoms has led me to a
couple of interesting sites about biodegradable plastics.
The first is a patent for a biodegradable polyurethane.
Standard polyurethane is a common material used for producing condoms as is
latex; both of which are NOT biodegradable.
The second is a link to a magazine article about a new
biodegradable polymer made from tree sap:
Looking at the image of the plastic toy in the article I am
doubtful that this polymer has appropriate properties for producing condoms,
however it is still a material worth considering for future projects.
It is important to note that there already is a
biodegradable condom already in the market; the lambskin condom. These condoms
do function as a method of contraception but do not however, protect users from
catching STI’s or HIV.
